Tlingit, Shaman

Side 2 of a Shaman’s mantle, Tlingit, made in Alaska, US c. 1800 CE. (L.2018.35.93) Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY.

The leather mantle hangs and looks like an upside down triangle with the tip cut off. On the mantle, three animal figures are painted in the Northwest formline style in black outline with red details. One of the animals appears to be a stylized bear.
