Punch_MayDay

“Punch of May Day,” Benjamin Robert Haydon (1829), Tate Britain.

A hectic London street scene in the 1820s. In the background there is a church spire against a cloud-filled sky. To the left is a Punch & Judy puppet show, to the right a bride and groom in a carriage. In the foreground a woman with bare feet sits on the street selling fruit, a dog watches the puppet show with its master, and to the right a little boy in sooty black-face dances.
