Benin Bronze Plaque Oba Horseback

Bronze plaque of Oba on Horseback (1978.412.309) from the Kingdom of Benin in present-day Nigeria, 16-17th century. Currently in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

A bronze plaque depicting an Oba (king) on horseback surrounded by four attendants. A series of these plaques lined the walls and columns of the Oba’s palace in Benin City and were stolen by the British when they pillaged the palace during the British Punative Expedition.
